As the complexity of automotive products has increased exponentially over the last years, modern luxury vehicle now comprise as many as 150+ Electronic Control Units (ECUs). With days to come, the increase in functionality will get more and more challenging as moderns car are turning out to be complex software systems. This also leads to various challenges in automotive software development in terms of requirements, design, testing, management, quality, configuration etc.

Automotive Functional safety standards (ISO 26262).

In recent years, cars have become more and more complex, intelligent. With multiple features on today’s automobiles that are electronically controlled has resulted in various advantages as well as contributed to additional risk. With complex software and hardware being part of the automotive systems, it is become important to recognize any potential risks of hardware or software related failures. The results of such failures could result in severe injury or possible loss of life. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) recognized this need and published the ISO 26262 standard to help ensure functional safety of electrical and electronic systems in road vehicles

With the increase in connectivity in vehicles such as Wi-Fi, WLAN, Bluetooth, USB, network, in cellular communication, apps etc., cars today are more of networked computers on wheels which are increasingly exposed to cyber-attacks. Vehicle to infrastructure, vehicle to vehicle, vehicle to cloud, and vehicle to everything technology also make cars vulnerable to hackers. Features such as automatic braking and remote start would take on a very different character if they were under the control of a remote. Current safety-critical standards are not sufficient to cover this type of risk and therefore new guidelines and standards need to be established/
